Flying and Gliding

Joining the Air Cadets opens up lots of opportunities, including the chance to fly! It’s our aim to get you airborne as often as possible, as a passenger in a light aircraft, a glider or even on-board RAF aircraft such as our Typhoon fast-jet or a Chinook helicopter.

Get your head in the clouds

There are plenty of opportunities for cadets to get in the air. Air Experience Flights could even see you take to the skies in a Grob Tutor light aircraft.

Stand out from the crowd and you could be put forward for an overseas flight on a Hercules, VC10 or Tri-star. If you’re really lucky you could even join a pilot in one of our fast-jet aircraft or experience the unbeatable exhilaration of a Red Arrows flight!

A Flying Account From Cpl Krass:

I have flown from RAF Benson twice with the air cadets, it is an amazing experience. On arrival at the RAF base, you learn about the emergency procedures (using a parachute and removing the canopy). Next you are kitted up into overalls, helmets, gloves and even sunglasses if it is a nice day. And finally for the flying! You are taken into the air and supervised by a trained RAF pilot who takes you through the way everything on a plane works! The pilot will tell you when you have control and you will have the opportunity to fly the plane all by yourself. One of the most exciting parts of the flight is when the pilot does aerobatics! The pilot will show you moves like the loop, barrel roll, stall turn and the half cuban. If you are lucky enough, you will be able to try a few yourself!

Here are some of Cpl Krass’ spectacular photos from the flight…
